You want a fulfilling life? Get into the Flow!

Being in the Flow

Ever heard the phrase, go with the flow?

There’s this awesome classic book by a famous University of Chicago psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience which i think holds one of the secrets to a fulfilling life.

The book discusses the concept of flow.

Flow is a state of consciousness wherein we totally get engrossed in an activity and full attention is focused on the activity bringing in a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

Have you ever experienced being a situation wherein you lose yourself in that activity, wherein time does not seem to exist and everything is just perfect? Did you notice that your attention to the activity is uninterrupted and your brain is in full gear, taking in the whole experience?

I love basketball and growing up, I had many moments where I felt I was unstoppable in a stretch. It’s as if I could not miss a shot and everything I did on the court was perfect. The right pass, the timely rebound, the perfect steal.

I also get into the state of flow during teaching when me and my students get into a wonderful discussion about the topic at hand.

Dr. Csikszentmihalyi writes that flow occurs in our life when our skills, attention, environment and will are all aligned. This is when creativity and learning unites as one.

The flow state is likely to happen when we engage in activities wherein the challenge of the activity matches your skill level. Remember we get bored when the task is too easy and we lose hope when the task is too difficult compared to our skill level. But when challenge and skill is balanced, flow occurs and I believe that one of the secrets to living a fulfilling life is to have lots of activities where we are in the flow :)

So incorporate in your life activities that often bring you to the state of flow. Your happiness awaits you in these activities.

I feel so awake when reading your posts, like they’re directed to me and would always evoke a certain part of me that I am trying to shake off and forget :/ I was once into that certain kind of positive flow until I decided to get out, it’s now chaos. :(

Sometimes, things happen…uncontrolled and doesn’t go the way we wanted them to. The best thing to do is to just go with the flow rather than be frustrated and stressed.

For me, being in the flow means doing what I want and one of them is blogging. There, I find happiness and a sense of accomplishment.
