What’s your word — Hassle or Hustle?

Jeff Goins, in one of his newsletter entries (you have to subscribe to get exclusive content), said that there are two keys to success : Passion and Hustle.

Get those two right and you’re bound to be successful.

Passion is doing what you love. It is what excites you when you wake up.

I think I have already personally sorted my passions so let me focus on the hustle part in this post.

The other part is hustle. Another word for hustle is practice. Giving your best work in your craft. Being a real artist.

An Artist Hustling

Malcolm Gladwell said we need around 10,000 hours to master our craft. Are you near that 10,000 mark already?

One of my favorite quotes has been from Steve Jobs.

Real Artists Ship! ~ Steve Jobs

What Steve meant was you create and produce your craft, whatever it may be.

Your passion might be business, or cooking, or singing. Whatever it is, you let your gift unfold and serve the world with it.

You simply deliver. Just like FedEx.

If you’re a writer or blogger, are you producing epic shit or just shit?

Do you write regularly? Do you update your blog regularly?

Or do you procrastinate and let your Lizard Brain prevent the artist in you to unfold?

I’ve succumbed to my Lizard Brain so often I can’t count the times already. Instead of Hustling, we label our tasks as hassle. We give excuses. You and I say, “That’s such a hassle”. We forget to hustle.

And with that, there goes our chance for success.

But we must continue to fight against this resistance from our lizard brains.

Seth Godin in one of his talks masterfully describes our purpose:

What you do for a living is not be creative, What you do is ship! ~Seth Godin

Are you going to ship?

What word will define you? Hassle or Hustle?

Mendokusai…the Japanese word for troublesome…it seems to be the word that most of us would think when faced with something big…not even big but any responsibility… :/ Unless one removes that kind of system in himself, wala mangyayari…

    again, great post, argee!

i agree with you, if we’re really passionate with our craft, we have to hustle. we have to be disciplined enough to hone it. besides, when you are passionate about something, you enjoy the process of creating!

i myself, whenever i write, i completely forget about time… i become lost in the words from my mind put into paper. :) or in the modern era, put into the computer.

Agreed. Yeah, there’s always an excuse to anything if you don’t want to do it, so don’t give in to that mañana habit. Drag your self if you have to. Only action can beat procrastination. Hustle!

Just do it! It’s a good slogan to remember and practice. Don’t think it. Don’t plan too long. Don’t make excuses.

Great Read! There are only two things in this world, reasons and results and reasons don’t count! We are defined by the results that we produce :)

    Excellent post!
It’s not WHAT we do that matters…
it’s HOW we do it. Each of us has own mission in life.
We have our own task and we ought to serve our purpose
in a HUSTLE way not in a HASSLE manner.

This is a really good thought to ponder on. Honestly, whenever I’m INTO certain things, I hustle and give out my best. But there are times that I get tired and shift to another hobby, which I think what made me a jack of all trades but master of none.. :( I hope I get to find what I really want to do and invest time and effort on.

I have always known that passion is needed for success but just now heard that you also need to Hustle, which makes a lot of sense. I know a lot of people who have the passion and start their own businesses. I will advise them on hustling too and hopefully they see a lot of difference on how things go for them. :) Thanks for sharing!
