The Biggest Hindrance To Your Success: The Lizard Brain

I have just finished reading Seth Godin‘s masterpiece, Linchpin: Are you Indispensable?

It’s a brilliant book, a manifesto, a challenge for you to release the artist in you.

But there is a big challenge that block your success: The Lizard Brain.

Lizard Brain

The Lizard brain contains the Resistance, the one that blocks the source of your great ideas and talents.

It blocks the artist inside you.

The Lizard Brain is part of your Limbic System in your brain. Things that it controls are anger, revenge, and fear.

The Lizard Brain makes you question your abilities. It makes you fearful. It tells you to conform and avoid standing out.

It makes you fear failure.

Even when you know failure is necessary for success.

Here are symptoms of the Lizard Brain operating in your life:

1) Procrastination

2) Excuses

3) Lack of Goals

4) Mediocrity

5) Being boring

6) Lack of Self Confidence

Do you see the Lizard brain operating in your life?

Are you hiding your brilliance?

So what’s the solution?

Seth Godin says:

The only solution is to call all the bluffs at once, to tolerate no rational or irrational reason to hold back on your art.

The only solution is to start today, to start now, and to ship.

I would be sharing more ideas from his book in coming posts.

My goodness — I didn’t know there was a term for that kind of ‘behavior’. Now I know that I’ve been constantly dealing with my own ‘Lizard Brain’. By the way, I love Seth Godin’s humor. I wrote about him once for one of my writing jobs. :)

Whoa! A lizard lives in my brain; that’s concerning! I totally agree with those symptoms. Fighting the lizard brain can sometimes be challenge if its claws are deeply embedded into the system, but defeating it is possible. :)

Wow! This is so informative and interesting! :D I think my lizard brain somehow hinders me from doing more in my life. I don’t have a problem when it comes to general confidence, but when it comes to testing new waters, I unconsciously make excuses to myself. I still haven’t read any of Seth Godin’s books, but I’ll definitely look for “Linchpin: Are you Indispensable?” the next time I visit the bookstore. I’m more for physical books than ebooks kasi ^^

That seems like a very worthwhile book! But wouldn’t it be better to not have the ‘Lizard’ part of your brain in your head? If you think about it, you would have success, but not having it would mean senseless decisions decided without thinking carefully. It would cause you to lose all assessment if a decision is well-conceived and properly planned/prepared for the consequences.

      Hi John,

Yes! It’s an excellent book by Seth Godin :) Good observation. Actually, the Lizard Brain is not totally evil. It does have its purpose especially in urgent times like life/death situations :)
