On Taking Risks

I came across this poem the other day and it got me thinking about risks.

Come to the Edge.

No, we will fall.

Come to the edge.

No, we will fall.

They came to the edge.

He pushed them and they flew.

by French poet, Guillaume Apollinaire

No Guts no Glory

The poem reminded me of baby eagles where their parents nudge them off cliffs to force them to spread their wings and unleash their flying prowess.

Risks are an essential part of our existence. If people did not risk and make mistakes in the process, we would still be living in prehistoric civilization.

To risk is to live. To avoid risk means to avoid to live. You are simply existing. But in risking, you become alive.

I’m sure you are familiar with the line, No guts, No glory.

Of course, I’m only talking about taking risks that can have benefits, where something can come out out of it.

Vices like smoking, is not taking risk. It’s just plain stupidity.

A lot of us get stuck in our comfort zone. We like being comfortable. We can blame our lizard brain for this.

We need to defeat the lizard brain so that we can take good risks and live once again.

I have taken many risks in my life. Some had good results, others did not materialize but on hindsight, i never regretted taking those risks.

Looking back, what I regretted was not taking enough risks. I wish I was more bolder, more courageous.

Srinivas encourages us to take small risks daily.

How about you? Are you a risk taker? What was the most risky thing you have done in your life?

Always remember this quote: Boldness has genius, power and magic in it! ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

To be able to be somewhere you haven’t been to, you have to take different steps you usually take. That’s how risks, it’s the leap of fate we take in trying out something new.

I am a hesitant type of person but most of the time I am willing to take risk only if I have a back up plan laid already :D

In all honesty, I’m really a cautious person. I hate taking risks coz basically.. its scary! whenever i have to make a risky decision, I make sure that I’ve got all my facts straight and there’s nothing else that I can do and that this is the only option that I can take. hehe. segurista?

One of the lessons that I’m practicing – No guts, no glory. We only live once, we might as well experience the good and bad things.

We should all learn to take risks, at the end of the day you wouldn’t say “I should have done this / I shouldn’t have done that” since you took the risk and you tried.

Take the risk. We need that from time to time…but always be careful!! Seek guidance from the Lord or from mentors! By the way, I love the poem, first time to read that poem! Thumbs up!

I was reading the poem and that’s what I thought too – mother eagle teaching her babies how to fly.
I guess, in some point, you wouldn’t know the answers to your questions, or what will happen next, if you won’t even try. But, in taking the risk, you must be prepared for the outcome :)

it’s like climbing up a stair. if one should fall one or two steps behind. it shall be cause to worry. the great thing is, we tried hard enough and when we get to the zenith…risks shall be worth trying…

    LIFE is a risk itself.
Sometimes, we have to feel pain
to taste victory or we have to reach
the lowest point in our lives to
    strengthen our faith in GOD.

We should take the risk in some points of our lives because if not, we wouldn’t know our capabilities to conquer challenges.
